Israel, an obstacle to establishment of WMD-free zone in ME, Minister

"Israel's attitude is a serious obstacle to the establishment of a Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)-free zone in the Middle East and to the restoration of a fair and sustainable peace" in the region, said Monday Moroccan Energy and Mining Minister, Mohamed Boutaleb.

Speaking at the opening of the 48th session of the general conference of IAEA (International Atomic Energy agency), the minister voiced disappointment that Israel continues to refuse adherence to non-proliferation systems and to submit its installations and activities to IAEA control.

On the other hand, the Moroccan official warned of the "threat of nuclear terrorism," saying all countries should benefit of the necessary cooperation to set up infrastructure of nuclear security.

Boutaleb called on all States to fully cooperate with the Agency both in the protection of nuclear equipment and in the fight of illicit trade in order to prevent all misuse of nuclear energy.

Morocco, he said, has backed all initiatives designed to limit WMD proliferation around the world. The kingdom, he went on, is committed to defending the lofty principle set by IAEA statute "Atoms for Peace."

High-level delegations from IAEA Member States are meeting at the annual General Conference in Vienna from 20 to 24 September on major issues facing the Agency, and to approve its programme and budget for the coming year.
