Spanish-Moroccan joint troops to be deployed in Haiti in October
Spanish defence minister, José Bono, confirmed Monday in Santiago (Chile) his government will dispatch troops part of the joint Spanish-Moroccan contingent to be deployed in Haiti in the second half of October part of the peace-keeping mission in the western side of "La Espanola" island.
Bono, in an official visit to Chile, said his country will dispatch 200 marines.
The Spanish minister deemed this move very significant because it highlights Spain's good relations with Morocco.
Morocco and Spain announced last July their decision to send joint troops to Haiti.
The peacekeeping mission aims at helping the Haitian transition government organize free elections and set up democratic institutions.
