UN security council grace period expires within hours; Khartoum waits UN report on Darfur
The Sudanese government is waiting for the content of the report to be submitted today by the UN secretary General Kofi Annan to the UN Security Council over Khartoum's commitment to the implementation of UN demands over the situation in Darfur.
With the end of the grace period given by the UN Security Council to Sudan to dismantle the weapons of Jangaweid militias and solving the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, the Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael refused to pre-assess events, noting that his country will do its best to cooperate with the expected UN Security Council resolution.
This, however, came while news rumored on an approaching agreement between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebels in Abuja talks over solving the humanitarian crisis in the troubled district.
The peace talks which are held under the auspices of the African Union were resumed on Monday after they were boycotted by the two rebel movements in protest of the allegations of attacks by the Sudanese government forces against the civilians.
