UN warns against a new wave of displacement in Darfur
The UN has warned against a new wave of displacement of refugees from Darfur -- in the west of Sudan -- to Chad fleeing attacks they were recently exposed to in the region.
The spokesman for the UNHCR, Ron Red-Monde, said that 30,000 Sudanese threatened to cross the borders as soon as a river filled with waterfall is dry, unless the UN organizations give them security guarantees.
The spokesman expressed the UN concern over the flow of this large number of refugees in one shift to the borders with Chad. A matter which increases pressure on the Organization to ensure food and shelter for the new arrivals to its camps which originally suffer a shortage in relief supplies.
The new warning to the UN came ten days before the end of the grace period given by the UN Security Council to the Sudanese government to make a progress in Darfur in order to preserve the life of the displaced or face international sanctions.
