Drug lord sentenced to 20 years in jail, $374 million fine
The Court of Appeal of Tetouan (Northern Morocco) on Wednesday sentenced drug lord, Mounir Erremach to 20 years in jail and a 3.37 billion DH (US$ 374 million) fine, in what the press described as one of the biggest trials in history of drug trafficking in the Kingdom.
Erramach, 29, was sued together with senior police, county police and customs officials, as well as magistrates, court clerks, a local official and businessmen for international drug trafficking.
The court also delivered verdicts ranging between acquittal and life imprisonment for 26 other defendants on different charges including non denunciation, unauthorized possession of firearms, forgery and use of forged documents, human trafficking and homicide attempt.
The drug lord and the other defendants were brought before the Tetouan appeal court after a dispute broke out between two rival groups in the northern city of Tetouan. Investigations revealed that he had established dubious relations with senior officials in the region to facilitate his illegal activities.
