Al-Ayam: Sudanese government, rebels renew agreement

Originally published

The Sudanese government and the rebels movement have agreed to renew the ceasefire agreement in the Nouba mountain for other six months starting as from January 19, 2003.

The commissioner general of the joint military committee in al-Nouba mountain Gen. G. A Wilhelminson described the renewal as a great opportunity for the people of al-Nouba who hope that the agreement will be converted to permanent peace in their areas.

In a statement to the Sudanese daily al-Ayam issued on Monday, the commissioner general called on the non-governmental organizations and UN relief agencies and the donor organizations to render support and hold projects for helping the people of al-Nouba.

In this framework, national organizations with the participation of the Danish Church organization started to dismantle the mines and open route tracks in al-Nouba mountain areas.
