Syria concerning Iraq and the UN Security Council
Syria's Information Minister, Adnan Omran, affirmed yesterday that Syria's stand towards UN Security Council's discussion of Iraqi report about arms of mass destruction is characterized by complete respect to the U.N convention, the rules of the International law and Security Council's mission.
In an interview broadcast by Monte Carlo Radio on Thursday he described the Security Council as a supreme court specialized in international security and peace, its rules are based on the principles of the Charter in the resolutions it takes. So, the documents it depends on in the ruling are basic for right and just resolution.
He wondered "how could the members of the court make right and responsible decision when the complete basic documents are given to certain members of the jury and not to all of them?"
Syria's permanent representative at the U.N Security Council, Mikhail Wahbeh, stressed yesterday that any American strike against Iraq will affect the whole region, a matter that Syria tries to prevent.
In a statement to the press at the UN headquarters, he indicated that the head of International Arms Inspection committee, Hans Blix and the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency affirmed clearly that Iraq was positively cooperative.
He added that he thinks there is no problem on the Iraqi side because it complies with resolution No. 1441, and Iraq presented its report on time.
He clarified that Syria will not participate in any discussions or any final conclusions of the Security Council because she does not have the complete copy or the complete text of the report referring to the fact that Syria attended the discussions but did not participate in them.
