UN chief, Syria and Lebanon

The Israeli radio said on Sunday that the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan informed the Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres on Saturday that the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud vowed to work for preventing the deterioration of conditions on the Israeli- Lebanese borders.

The radio said that this was expressed in a telephone call held between Annan and Peres on Saturday evening when Peres asked Annan to interfere in the course of events on the Israeli northern borders and warned against the grave consequences might be inflicted on the loss of controlling things because of the activities of the Hizbullah party.
