General organization of Remote Sensing 12th international symposium
The 12th International symposium of the General organization of Remote Sensing (GORS ) was opened on October 29 and will continue until November 1st at the Damascus Samir Amis hotel. Its main theme is international and Arab co-operation in remote sensing and space sciences.
The following Arab and foreign states are taking part in the activities of the symposium. They are: Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, Yemen, Libya, Germany, Russia, White Russia, France, Spain, Turkey, Italy and Austria.
In a presentation under the title " Satellites and its role in land and cosmic monitoring " Dr. Maen al-Azmeh from Syria said that at present time there are more than 2500 satellites orbit the earth. Their weights range between several hundreds of kilograms and several tons and the orbit heights also range between few hundred kilometers and 3600 Kms. Among its main tasks are to ensure modern TV broadcasting and telecommunications; and remote sensing of earth to investigate the natural resources and land reconnaissance, some of them are specialized for military processors to assist the accurate Globe positioning ( GPS).
Highlighting the experience of the Lebanese astronomy observatory project: towards the development of astronomy and space science in Lebanon, Dr. Rojaih Hajjar said that the national, Lebanese observatory project is aiming to develop the astronomy in Lebanon. The project is including the establishment of university center connecting on observatory that has a telescope with a diameter of one meter to benefit the pupils of Lebanese universities and scholars as a hobbyists also the observatory operates within NORT rang. Where focusing is firstly on the researches that are relating to changes of physical properties of stars, this paper also exposes the necessary steps to establish this project.
On the Astronomy observatory project in Tunisia, Fouad Anan said that the Tunisian government has agreed to establish an Astronomy observatory with a telescope of one meter size. And its has given the agreement to the Tunisian astronomy society and to youth and science society, and some other specialized organizations of Astronomy to start the study of the project.
After examining climate statistics ( Humidity ) in Tunisia which have been prepared by meteorological directorate for a long period.. It was agreed to build the observatory in the western south of Kafsah province.
" The application of geo- information systems in the interpretation of geological and geo-physical date of some general eastern desert, granttic masses in Humr Wajjat area, Egypt," was a topic presented by Mahmoud S.M. Youssef Gamal A. Shedid.
It says that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have emeged as a core methodology allowing for integration to occur if desirable " or allowing for each of the separate fields to greatly enhance their own efficiency. Thus GIS is the result of linking parallel developments in many separates spatial data processing, disciplines, and it allows for some considerable developmental effort and costs to cease being duplicated.
Paper maps have traditionally formed the basis of special inquiry and these were needed at a large range of scales. Paper maps occupy much space, easily damaged, outdate quickly, expensive to produce and date can not be rapidly extracted from them as well as the data can not be rapidly changed in them.
Atlas- GIS software package, which is a powerful desktop geographic information system, was used for inputting, storing, manipulating, presenting a merged geological and geophysical data of the area.
On remote sensing application to coastal environment management in Qatar. Dr. Ali Abdullah al- Herqan said the Arabia Gulf has characterized with a clear weather and a little cloudy sky through year days. Where of this area of world has made an idealistic for remote sensing application technology in a wide fields? Where cloudiness is considered a limit factor for such applications. He added that Qatar is one of the Arab states that looks down upon Arabian Gulf is as a peninsula with its zigzag coasts and its environmental sensitive that its length is about 500 KM of which the remote sensing technique is demanded in its management and protecting it Qatar uses remote sensing technology in many fields by scientific and applied research center (SARC) in Qatar university which has a specialized remote sensing unit occupied with hard ware and soft ware for digital processing remotely sensed.
