UN discussions on terrorism wind up without agreement
The United Nations (UN) General Assembly wrapped up discussions on terrorism Friday but no final resolution was reached due to differences among the 189 member states.
The UN General Assembly spokesman said in a press conference that Chairman Han Seung-Soo agreed with representatives of the regional groups in the Assembly to defer discussing any final resolution on terrorism, adding the members preferred not to get involved in endless negotiations that would jeopardize their unity.
Egypt's Permanent Delegate to the UN ambassador Ahmed Abul - Gheit said in statements following the five-day discussions that the recent incidents in the United States proved the importance of the call made by President Mubarak years ago to convene an international anti-terrorism conference to draw up a comprehensive strategy to combat terrorism.
Abul-Gheit said statements of 166 countries delivered in the General Assembly dabate all concurred on the inevitability of international coordination in the field of exchange of information on terrorist organizations and their finance resources.
