Syrian study to join the WTO

Originally published

The Syrian Cabinet has called on the Syrian ministry of the economy to form technical committees to study the consequences of Syria's joining the World Trade Organization.

A government's report prepared for that purpose said that Syria's treasure's interests will be damaged if it will join the World Trade Organization. But on the intermediate and long run there will be positive results for Syria's joining the WTO.

Worthy mentioning that the Syrian ministry of the economy has proposed joining WTO and to study this issue seriously, while the Syrian ministry of finance sees that by joining the WTO the custom's fees will be affected.

Syria was among the first countries which joined in 1947 the General Agreement for Tariff and Trade Known as " GATT" and withdrew from it in 1951, in protest of Israel's joining it.
