Moroccan Sahara issue evolution reviewed
The latest developments of the Moroccan Sahara issue were surveyed at a meeting in Rabat Tuesday between Moroccan town-planing, housing and environment minister, Mohamed El Yazghi, and Algerian ambassador to Morocco, Boualam Bessayeh.
The two sides reviewed the evolution of the issue in light of the recent resolution of the United Nations Security Council.
In a resolution passed --presented jointly by France, Russia, the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland and the USA-- the Council called for a political solution to the issue within Morocco's kingty.
Yazghi and Bessayeh highlighted the fraternity and solidarity ties binding Morocco and Algeria and stressed the need to continue dialogue to enhance bilateral ties and pave the way for the reactivation of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA).
UMA was set up in 1987 by Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania. The union has so far been unable to progress as a full-fledged regional grouping due to political differences, especially Algeria's direct intervention in the Moroccan Sahara issue.
