Moussa: Priority to restructuring the Arab League to cope with world organizations
Arab League Chief Amr Moussa said that he is earnestly and fastly working to fully comprehend the current problems facing the Arab League. According to Moussa, the first thing that should be done is restructuring the 50-year-old system of Arab joint action, which has been target for criticism and has always been vulnerable.
Moussa pointed out, in an interview with Abu Dhabi Satellite Channel on Sunday, that the new system should serve the Arab world and cope with developments in similar European and regional organisations.
If the Arab League succeeds in updating itself and rightly fulfilling its objectives, it could efficiently be able to solve all political, economic and social problems, said Moussa. Moussa pointed out that the Arab League has not tackled a number of Arab problems and for many reasons was not able to iron out Arab economic ones. In this respect, Moussa cited the files of the Western Sahara, south Sudan, the Horon of Africa crisis, UAE islands and north Iraq as some of the issues which have not been tackled by the Arab League. We will collect information on every Arab state and its relevant problems. We will not interfere in the states' affairs or their problems or try to dictate a role Moussa elaborated that only at the time seen by parties concerned as proper for the League to intervene, the League would then have full concept of the problem and relevant data to start contacts accordingly and have a feedback as far as the issues then raised were concerned.
This is what we call the preparatory stage and data collection and this is exactly what I have called for now, he added. Moussa warned against the growing anger which might spill over in an unruly manner in the Arab world, citing the Arab rage following the recent visit of Mauritanian foreign minister to Israel as an example. He denied calls by any Arab states to suspend Mauritania's AL membership. Moussa called for an Israeli withdrawal from the occupied lands and halting settlement activities.
The Arab League secretary general lashed out at the US bias in favour of Israel as manifested over the past ten years, and which has led to the failure of the peacemaking process, adding that the process has started with an intifada (uprising) and ended also with an intifada which proves the total failure of negotiation management.
