AL: Jerusalem is a red line that can not be exceeded
The Secretary General of the Arab League (AL) Ismat Abdul Miguid has asserted that the Arab and Islamic position is unwavering and will not be changed concerning Jerusalem, and this stand is a red line that can not be surpassed by any Arab state.
In a press statement he made in Cairo on Thursday, the Arab League chief added that the Arab stand is based on that East Jerusalem is an occupied Arab land since 1967 on which is applicable the UN Security Council resolution no. 242 which is recognized and backed by the US and on the ground of which the ME peace process in Madrid started in 1991.
The AL chief explained that the successive US administrations have committed to this position which considers east Jerusalem as part of the occupied Arab territories in 1967 and that UN resolution 242 states not to confiscate territories of others by means of force and that Jerusalem is one of the main causes in the final negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
He continued that he informed this stand to a US diplomatic delegation including 25 diplomats working in the Middle East region.
The AL chief also recalled the decision of the UN security Council no 478 of 1980 which called on all world countries not to transfer their embassies to Jerusalem as well as the decision of the 11th Arab summit held in Amman in 1980 which stressed that all Arab states have to boycott their relations with countries that transfer their embassies to Jerusalem or recognize Jerusalem as a capital for Israel.
