Arab League voices support to Syria for UN seat

Originally published

The Arab League has expressed its support to backing Syria to occupy the Arab post at the UN Security Council for a non- permanent seat for two years between 2002-2004.

The Arab League assistant secretary general for Palestine Affairs Saeed Kamal said that the unanimous backing of the Arab and Asian states to nominate Syria for this post is an assertion and appreciation for the Syrian position in the face of the Israeli aggression and in firmly defending the Arab rights to restoring back the occupied Arab lands in the Golan, Jerusalem and other occupied Palestinian territories until June 4, 1967 border lines.

In press statements he made in Cairo on Saturday Kamal added replying to what has been stated on Israel's opposition to nominate Syria for that seat, that this Israeli stand stressed " the Israeli aggressive mentality which represents the first reference to impose conditions for surrender on the Arab states." He added that the position of Sharon's government towards nominating Syria is in contradiction to what it had announced of its readiness to reach peace with each of Syria and Lebanon.

The Arab League assistant secretary general expressed his hope that the US position in rejecting the Israeli stand to this effect, will continue.
