On the Kurds in Syria

Originally published

The London- based daily al-Quds al-Arabi on Wednesday issued an article by the Syrian citizen Suleiman al-Naser who lives in Munich, Germany, in reply to a previous article by the Kurdish citizen Ismael Sheikho published in the same paper in which he refuted claims made by Sheikho on the sufferings of the Kurds in Syria.

Nasser, who is from the area where most of the Kurds live in Syria said that the Kurdish people speak Kurdish among themselves at the university, and at work or in the army and are not arrested for that, noting that the Syrian TV screens artistic programs in which Kurds take part in the Kurdish folkloric costumes and the Kurdish language and that there are many Kurds who work at the country's security departments including a minister and rectors at university.

Naser continued that the Kurds celebrate " Eid al-Neirouz" freely in the orchards of Damascus, noting that what has been said of burning al-Hassaka prison did not take place in the course of a political nor sectarian form, rather as a result for personal calculations and personal revenge.

The writer stressed that in contrary to what has been claimed by Sheikho, the Kurds in Syria enjoy the Syrian nationality, except those who sneak through the Syrian- Turkish borders to it.
