The Yemeni elections and a Jewish candidate
Sources at the higher committee for elections in Yemen said on Sunday that a Jew has submitted documents for the membership of the local councils at the directorate of Reidah, Omran province to the north of the capital Sanaa.
These sources explained that Azer Ibrahim submitted the request of his nomination to the membership of the local council by a memorandum from the general people's conference party in the province.
The al-Meithaq paper, the mouthpiece of the ruling general people's conference party in Yemen quoted several days ago leaders of the Jewish community which at the meantime includes more than 250 persons their assertions that they will vote for any qualified Muslim candidate for this post and that such a candidate is not available they will nominate one of the Jews to launch these elections.
The paper added that the Jewish community stressed it will vote " yes" for the constitutional amendments proposed by President Ali Abdullah Saleh in August 2000 and ratified by the Parliament in November, 2000.
These amendments will be debated for a referendum.
