Tunis, Tripoli call for urgent Arab summit

Originally published

Tunis and Tripoli called for an "urgent" Arab summit and reactivation of Arab common action to preserve Arab interests.

The appeal came in a Tunisian-Libyan joint statement issued Monday at the conclusion of a visit to Libya by Tunisian president, Zine El Abidine Benali, this June 3-4.

The two heads of state further stressed the need to join efforts to establish a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle-east and renewed solidarity with the Iraqi people, supporting all efforts meant to lift the embargo against the Arab country.

On Saturday, President Ben Ali and Libyan leader Kaddafi held talks on the evolution of the Arab Maghreb construction process, ongoing efforts to revive the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) and means of upgrading bilateral relations.

Tunisia and Libya are members of the UMA which also musters Morocco, Mauritania and Algeria.
