Arab League urges UN Security Council to stop Israeli aggression

Originally published

Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid has informed the ambassadors of the UN Security Council's five permanent states of the decision taken by the Arab League council on reconsidering relations between certain Arab states and Israel and rejection of the Arab participation in multilateral talks before attaining substantial progress in the peace process on all tracks.

In a statement following his meeting with the ambassadors of the UN Security Council's five permanent member states and with the special envoy of the UN chief's envoy Terje Larsen, Abdul Meguid said the Arab states have decided to postpone the meetings of several committees that emerged from the Moscow meeting of last February, in confirmation of the Arab persistence to work to take a stand towards the continued Israeli aggression against Lebanon.

Abdul Meguid stated that he had conveyed to the five ambassadors the denunciation and regret of all Arab states for the coincidence between the recent Israeli aggression against Lebanon and the visit of Larsen to Beirut.

The AL chief urged the UN Security Council's five permanent member states to pressure Israel to stop its continued aggressions against Lebanon and informed them of the decision taken by the AL in backing Lebanon to form a special international criminal court in order to try the Israeli war criminals who committed the Qana massacre in 1996 and to oblige Israel to pay compensation to Lebanon for the human casualties and the economic and material damages resulting from its repeated aggressions against Lebanon.

The AL stated that these attacks form serious violations of Lebanon's safety and sovereignty, the April Understanding of 1996, the international legitimacy resolutions and the world declaration for human rights.
