Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid has called on the UN to shoulder its responsibilities to halt the Israeli aggression against Lebanon and to pressure Israel to abide by UN Security Council resolution 425.

In an urgent message he sent on Sunday to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the AL chief stressed the need for the UN to carry out its assigned tasks in implementing its resolutions, especially no. 425 which provides for an immediate Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon's land, sea and airspace.

The Arab League chief's message also included the decision taken on Saturday by the Arab League to maintain Arab solidarity with Lebanon in confrontation of Israeli aggressions.

The Arab League chief sent similar messages to the president and permanent members of the UN Security Council, Organization of African Unity Secretary General Salem Ahmad Salem and Organization of the Islamic Conference Secretary General Azzedine Laraki.

The Arab League chief also announced that he will start a series of urgent political and diplomatic contacts with effective international sides in order to halt the Israeli aggression on Lebanon and to inform them about the Arab position in rejecting this Israeli aggression and demanding them to take decisive steps towards making the Middle East peace a success according to the Madrid conference terms of reference and the land for peace formula.
