Originally published

The foreign relations commissioner at the European Union, Christopher Patten, has stressed Syria's commitment to Middle East peace, saying that, "Syria is not optimistic, due to the Israeli position."

Upon his arrival in Tel Aviv on Wednesday he said, "Frankly there is no big sun behind the clouds of the peace process." He stressed his willingness to know how the EU can contribute to the revival of the peace process.

Patten stressed the EU commitment to the implementation of UN resolution 425, which provides for Israel's unconditional withdrawal from south Lebanon.

He added that the EU is concerned with reaching a comprehensive and just agreement in the Middle East, stressing that the European states have to continuously follow up on developments in the Middle East peace process.
