46 Afghans and Iraqis stranded after shipwreck in Indonesia

Originally published

A wooden ship with 46 Afghans and Iraqis on board, including three women, ran aground in a beach of the Indonesian West Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesian news agency ANTARA reported.

Police sources, quoted by Antara, said 29 Afghans are now held at a police station, and 17 Iraqis have been sent to Denpasar, Bali, by bus.

One of three women gave birth to a baby boy on the ship and was admitted to a local health center.

Unlike the Afghans, the Iraqis were in possession of legal papers.

"According to information that we have gathered from them, the 17 Iraqis came here for a holiday, but the Afghans have no clear purpose," the police said.

"They (Afghans) merely said they were avoiding a civil war in their country," the police added.
