Originally published

The Moroccan trade union Confederation Democratique du Travail (CDT) decided to lodge a complaint with the International labor Organization against Spain for non-protection of Moroccan expatriates who were subject to racist acts in Almeria.

CDT strongly denounced the tragic incidents that targeted Moroccan immigrants in El Egido and the passive attitude of the Spanish police.

CDT also urged the Spanish, Moroccan and European democratic forces to mobilize against this xenophobe practices and called on the Spanish government to ensure security for Moroccan immigrants, to protect their rights, to take legal action against the authors of these acts and to compensate the victims.

It further called on the Moroccan government to give due attention to this issue and to summon the ambassador of Spain

to Morocco to convey to him the Moroccan public opinion's concerns over El Egido events.

The trade union also decided to send a delegation to El Egido to inquire about the situation of Moroccan immigrants and proposed the holding of an extraordinary meeting of the two houses of Parliament to examine this question.

Moroccans settled in the Andalusian locality of El Egido, near Almeria, were subject to terrorist acts Monday night in retaliation for the murder of a Spanish woman allegedly by a mentally-disturbed Moroccan. 52 Moroccans were seriously injured and 17 arrested during the clashes.
