Egypt, Judicial, 5/29/1999
The supreme state security prosecution in Egypt started an investigation into a fundamentalist delivered by Azerbaijan to Cairo last year.
Official security sources expected that the suspect might be presented before a military court.
Egyptian lawyer Abd El-Monem El-Maksoud said that his client, Ihab Saker, who was delivered to Egypt in September 1998, was subjected to an investigation by the prosecution which charged him with joining a secret organization aimed at toppling the Egyptian government by force.
Saker left Egypt with two of the Islamic Jihad group's leaders conducted by Aymen El-Zawahri. The leaders are Ahmed Salamah Mabrouk, who is considered by the Egyptian authorities to be the right hand man of El-Zawahri, and Esam El-Din Hafez, who has Canadian citizenship and who was arrested with Mabrouk and Saker in Azerbaijan. Hafez who was sentenced in the case of those coming back from Albania to life with hard labor.
