Opposition freeze participation and challenge orders
Algeria, Politics, 11/5/1997
In spite of the Algerian President Liamine Zeroual's call on the opposition parties to put the strategic interests of Algeria before their own interests and to go to court to air their protests, 6 opposition parties stated that they will form a coordination committee which will follow what they called "forging" the election. Those parties also requested their representatives who are parliament members to do the same.
The 6 parties, the Peaceful Society Movement, the Labor, the Renaissance, the Gathering for Culture, the Socialist Powers Front, and the Renovation, agreed on rejecting the results of the election, freezing their participation in the local councils and continuing unified peaceful protests. The Algerian Liberation Front Party did not participate in these discussions.
The Six parties stated that the President Zeroual did not tackle many issues raised by the protest marchers and that the opposition parties expected more decisive stances in the President's address.
The protests of the 6 parties came to challenge the orders, described by the opposition parties as provocative, issued by the Ministry of Interior to ban all kinds of demonstrations. The opposition parties stated that they will continue their protests, which are protected by their legitimate constitutional rights.
Meanwhile, a bomb exploded in one of the markets near the Algerian capital Algiers in which 12 people were injured, though eyewitnesses confirmed that two people were killed in that explosion.
