European Parliament criticizes Israel's disproportionate response
Lebanon-Israel-European Union, Politics, 7/14/2006
The President of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell yesterday said that "Israel's disproportionate response can only lead to a worsening of the crisis."
Borrell who is currently visiting China said in a statement that "there will be no possibility of a solution being found if an attitude that disregards international law is maintained."
"The explosive situation in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories is dramatic and there is a risk of a return to open warfare. On behalf of the European Parliament, I call upon all the parties to bring this escalation of violence to an immediate end."
Switzerland as recently as days ago said Israel's attacks on civilians are a violation of international humanitarian law, which means a violation of the Geneva Convention. The UN civil rights committee has voted to start an investigation into Israel's actions.
