EU: Egypt plays a key role in filling security and political vacuum in Gaza
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 6/25/2005
The official spokesman for Javier Solana, the EU foreign policy commissioner said Europe will embark on large scale moves for shoring up the Middle East peace process.
The spokesman said Solana would make a tour next month of Egypt, the Palestinian National Authority territories and Israel with the aim of coordinating Israel withdrawal from Gaza and northern West Bank.
The spokesman said the EU attaches much significance to the key role to be played by Egypt in rendering withdrawal from Gaza and northern West Bank successful and in filling the security and political vacuum following withdrawal.
Meantime, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank and Gaza Strip is an initial step towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian state living side by side with Israel.
Straw at a press conference with James Wolfensohn, the special envoy of the Quartet to the Middle East, said massive developments of the peace process between the PA and Israel during the past stage should be taken advantage of in order to reach a settlement.
