Lebanon, Politics, 6/25/2005

Thousands of the Lebanese people on Friday eulogized the funeral of the former secretary general of the Lebanese communist party George Hawi staring as from the hospital of the American University of Beirut amid slogans deploring his assassination on Tuesday.

Thousands of persons including political leaders walked in the march of the eulogy carrying Lebanese flags and those of the Lebanese communist party and banners reading "George Hawi is the hero of national unity." The procession of the funeral was attended by the leaders of the communist party, led by its secretary general Khaled Haddadeh, as well as the secretary of the democratic left movement Elias Attallah who was presumed to have have met with Hawi minutes before his assassination. Loudspeakers chanted national songs while women threw, in a traditional manner on such occasions, rice on the eulogizers. The funeral procession headed towards Mar Georgous church, situated in the commercial part of the city to pray on Hawi's body.

The Lebanese opposition had demanded the UN Security Council to issue a new resolution enlarging the scale of the work of its investigation committee to include also the acts of assassination which followed the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri.

The Lebanese opposition forces also renewed demands for the President Emil Lahoud to resign and held him responsible for the assassination of Hawi on Lahoud's being the "spearhead of the Lebanese- Syrian security system."
