Foreign press, ambassadors visit Syrian-Iraqi borders to inspect claims
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 6/23/2005

The Syrian Foreign Ministry in cooperation with the Ministry of Information organized Tuesday a tour of the Syrian-Iraqi border area for a number of foreign countries' ambassadors to Damascus, military attaches, Arab and foreign news agencies and TV network reporters to get informed of measures taken by Syria to control its borders with Iraq, thus refuting claims and accusations of infiltration across the Syrian borders.

During the tour, they were able to observe closely the measures taken by Syria along the borders, including land barricades and guard posts and the increase in the number of soldiers controlling the borders around the clock.

In a statement to the media, the border guard commander said that Syria built 547 outposts and deployed over 7500 soldiers along the borderline with Iraq and a barrier of 750 km and a height of four meters to prevent infiltration.

The source also pointed out that according to the international law, the responsibility of border protection should be held by the two countries. "Syria has fully fulfilled her obligations in this respect, and has spent millions of Syrian pounds on fortifications, land barriers, cement blocks, barbed wires, and guard outposts along the borders in order to ensure security."
