Lebanon-UN, Politics, 4/29/2005
Two UN teams arrived in Beirut on Wednesday evening, one of them is in charge of investigating the full and complete withdrawal for the Syrian forces from Lebanon, while the second is preparing to help the UN disclose persons and sides which are involved in the assassination of Rafiq al- Hariri.
The first UN team entered Lebanon on Thursday coming from Damascus where it had spent two days via land route. It is composed of the assistant of the military advisor of the UN peace keeping forces of the Senegal's nationality al-Haj Muhammad Kanji and one aide, the Finnish Cary Makninrish, and the chief of staff of the UN forces in Cyprus, of the British nationality, Yan Sinkler.
This team is due to submit its report during one week to the UN secretary general Kofi Annan.
Though Damascus and Beirut announced the completion of the withdrawal of the Syrian forces, Washington expressed its concern over the possibility that Syrian intelligence elements remained in Lebanon. For his part, Annan announced that he waits for the results of the investigations which his team is carrying out.
The second UN team arrived in Lebanon on late Wednesday evening and started on Thursday its contacts with the Lebanese officials.
The chief of the delegation Mark Mortarman notified the Lebanese acting foreign ministry secretary Butrous Asaker that his mission is in particular to provide logistic means like choosing the headquarters of the committee and ensuring necessary communications means and protection to the team.
