Sezer's visit to Syria to boost relations

Turkish political parties on Monday underlined the importance of the upcoming Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer's visit to Syria in developing bilateral relations.

"Syrian-Turkish relations have achieved important progress during a short time in the political, economic, trade and security domains," Deputy Chairman of Turkish Development and Justice Party, Nacati Kaya, told SANA.

"Syria is the main gate for Turkey to the Arab world, so it is very important to develop bilateral cooperation," Nacati said, adding that Sezer's expected visit on Wednesday would contribute to boosting advanced relations between the two countries.

He said "both Syrian and Turkish peoples are living in one region, have historical relations and relative ties, and this would also bolster bilateral ties." Former Turkish MP Hamad Yelcin Kaya, for his part, underlined that Syrian-Turkish relations are developing remarkably, particularly after the visit of President Bashar al-Assad to Turkey last year.

"President Sezer's expected visit to Syria will contribute to giving new momentum to relations between the two countries," Yelcin Kaya added in a similar statement to SANA.

Meantime, The Syrian-Turkish relations have extensively developed over the past few years laying the base for a new stage built on strategic partnership, good neighborliness, historic and geographic elements between both countries.

The Turkish president's visit to Damascus this week will give great momentum to those relations that places atop of the two countries foreign policies' priorities.

Turkey's care for cementing ties with Syria, despite all attempts to hurt those relations, gained the Syrian government's appreciation which underlined the Turkish side's independence and care for stability and regional cooperation to set an example to be followed by other neighboring countries.

Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer's stance was firm towards all attempts to intervene in his visit to Damascus. He pointed out that no side can prevent him from going to Syria, in reference to the U.S. Ambassador's provocative statements.
