Lebanon calls for a quick investigation of Hariri assassination
Lebanon-UN, Politics, 4/9/2005
The moves on ground regarding the withdrawal of the Syrian forces from Lebanon, coupled with accelerated developments at the political level following the issuance of UN resolution 1595, provided for the formation of an international investigation committee on the assassination of the Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri.
Lebanese parliamentarian, member in the Hariri parliamentary bloc Ghenwas Jalloul welcomed this resolution and considered it as a realization to the main demands set by the opposition.
On the other side, the Lebanese authorities vowed to cooperate with the international investigation committee and called on this committee to complete its work as soon as possible. This was expressed in conclusion of the meeting between the Lebanese persident Emil Lahoud, the speaker of parliament Nabih Berri and the designated Lebanese prime minister Omar Karami in the Vatican before the beginning of the funeral of Pope John Paul II.
Meantime, the resigned Lebanese foreign minister Mahmoud Hamoud said in statements to the press in Beirut that there are no obstacles in cooperation as far as the UN takes into consideration Lebanese sovereignty.
In another development, Lebanese political sources expected Karami to form his government on Monday after several week controversy that might lead to the postponement of legislative elections due in May.
