Egypt proposes mediation between Syria and Israel

Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency Majid Abdul Fattah has stressed that Cairo is proposing to mediate between the two Syrian and Israeli sides. He called on Tel Aviv to follow Syria's example noting that "Israel knows well what it is wanted from it."
The Egyptian spokesman said that an international conference is due to be held to discuss the negotiations on various tracks and to be followed by the final solutions negotiations and then the final settlements conference. This will be according to steps demanded in the Roadmap.
Abdul Fattah did not rule out that the visit of the Egyptian delegation which visits Israel today is to discuss this matter, noting that the basic objective of the visit is to give the peace process in the Palestinian territories a push forward.
Concerning the Lebanese file, the Egyptian official said that Damascus discussed taking other measures in implementation of the UN Security Council resolution number 1559. He also stressed that both Presidents Mubarak and al-Assad also discussed the role Syria has to play to convince the Palestinian groups residing on its lands to support the elections of the Palestinian Authority due to be held by the beginning of 2005.
For his part, the UN envoy to the Middle East Terry Rod Larsen renewed his assertion on Damascus's readiness to resume the negotiations with Israel without prior conditions.
In statements in Jerusalem, Larsen called on Israel to avail this opportunity to move quickly towards returning back to the table of negotiations, describing the will of the Syrian President to negotiate with Israel without prior conditions as very encouraging.
Last week, the UN official met with the Syrian President al-Assad in Damascus and said that al-Assad extends his hands for peace with Israel.
