Syria's role appreciated by Italy

Italy expressed appreciation over Syria's efforts in combating terrorism, pointing to its important role in foiling a terrorist attack that was targeting the Italian and Western interests in Lebanon.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Italian Defence Minister Antonio Martino underlined importance of Syria's role in cooperation with the Lebanese and Italian authorities to thwart an attempt to blow up the Italian embassy in Beirut, and its cooperation to foil a series of other attacks on the Western interests in Lebanon and other states.

For his part, Italian Ambassador to Lebanon Franco Mistretta said that discovering the attack was the result of cooperation among the Lebanese, Italian and Syrian security services, expressing appreciation over their efforts.

In a statement following a meeting with the Lebanese Interior Minister in Beirut, Mistretta underlined that fighting international terrorism is impossible without cooperation among all states. He described as good the security situation in Lebanon.
