First Syrian prisoner released

News reports in Damascus said that the Syrian authorities released on Tuesday evening Imas Sheiha ( 51) year old, the oldest political prisoner in the Syrian jails after he had spent 30 years in prison after he was convicted of belonging to the Arab communist organization.

Syrian lawyer and human right activist Anwar al Bunni said that that Sheiha who is not only considered the " dean " of Syrian prisoners but also in the world was released in addition to other 55 prisoners most of them affiliate to the Islamic trend especially the Muslim Brothers movement.

Number of Syrian prisoners who were released in recent days tolled 160 most of them are of Islamic backgrounds, following the Presidential pardoning issued by the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on the occasion of four years of assuming authority. Sheiha was accused on attempting to attack American interests in Damascus by the beginning of the 1970s.
