On President al-Assad visit to Tehran

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad and his Iranian counterpart President Mohammed Khatami held a meeting in Tehran on Sunday.
Talks during the meeting dealt with the bilateral relations between the two countries and means of developing them in all fields.
The discussions also dealt with the regional and international developments, the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and Iraq.
Points of views of the two leaders were identical regarding all raised issues. They stressed the necessity of ending the occupation of Iraq, preserving its unity and territorial integrity and regaining its sovereignty.
They also expressed support to the Palestinian people in facing the Israeli inhuman practices.
Later, the two Presidents resumed their discussions in a special meeting which was attended by Vice-President Abdul Halim Khaddam, and Foreign Ministers of both countries Farouk al-Shara and Kamal Kharazi.
In a press conference, President Assad expressed his pleasure to visit Iran for the third time, asserting the continuous and intensified meetings between officials of both countries proved their efficiency even before the Iraqi issue.
"The topics are numerous, on the top of which are the Iraqi issue, the Palestinian cause, the deadlocked peace process and the international situation," al-Assad added.
President al-Assad stressed that points of views were identical regarding the Iraq's independence, unity and integrity, the necessity of withdrawal of the occupation forces from Iraq, mechanism of the Syrian-Iranian coordination and unifying the future reading regarding the situation in Iraq.
For his part, President Khatami said "President al-Assad's visit reflects the Syrian-Iranian rapprochement at this dangerous situation to exchange points of views and ideas on all the international issues." He affirmed that Iraq's neighbouring countries are interested in the Iraqi situation because insecurity and instability in it dangerously affects the region as a whole.
Khatami emphasized that the solution for the Iraqi issue is ending the occupation, establishing a popular ruling that represents all the Iraqi sects, in addition to cooperation of the international community, particularly the neighboring countries in this regard.
