Egypt, Politics, 6/10/2004
The death of the leaing figure in the Muslim Brothers group, Akram al-Zuheiri, during his detention raised accusations against the security authorities in Egypt over maltreatment of political prisoners.
The media official in the group, Abdul Menem Mahmoud, said that " engineer Akram al-Zuheiri died on Wednesday morning" but gave no details on conditions of his death. Al-Zuheiri belongs to a group of 54 Islamic activists detained on May 16 under the charge of organizing demonstrations especially in universities in protest of Israel's assassination of Sheikh Ahmad Yassin and Abdul Aziz al-Ranteisi.
Mahmoud explained that an official at the ministry of the Interior announced the death of al-Zuheiri yesteray ( Wednesday) at the headquarters of the People's Assembly replying to a question from the Muslim Brothers group over "violating the rights of detained Islamists." Parliamentary sources quoted the assistant for the minister of the Interior, Lt. Gen. Ahmad Zia Eddine, as saying before a committee at the People's Assembly ( the parliament) that al-Zuheiri died in Terra prison because of wounds in his head as he was transported in the prison's car to investigations.
In a statement, the Muslim Brothers said that "al-Zuheiri was left in a grave situation and was given no medical treatment for 10 days, through the prison's administration and the officer of the state security department in Terra prison were notified about his critical health condition, and despite the fact tha his prison mates appealed that he was almost dying."
