Belgian FM for maintaining dialogue with Syria
Syria-Belgium, Politics, 3/24/2004
Belgium Foreign Minister Louis Michel stressed the importance of dialogue with Syria who plays a pivotal role in the peace process in the Middle East.
In a statement on Tuesday, Michel asserted that dialogue between the European states and the Middle East contributes to boosting bilateral relations, establishing constructive partnership and achieving peace in the region.
He pointed out to the necessity of working with the Arab League and with the Organization of the Islamic Conference to combat terrorism.
" War against terrorism is not a war against Islam or the Arabs," he added.
He also condemned the assassination of Hamas Leader Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, asserting the EU's denunciation of such practices due to their dangerous repercussions.
He believed that sending international forces into the occupied lands to keep peace is not the solution, asserting the necessity of doubling efforts to reach a more positive formula for work with the Arab states.
