Al-Shara - Solana meet on ME developments
Syria-European Union, Politics, 3/4/2004

Syria's Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara met Wednesday in Cairo the EU Foreign Policy and Security Coordinator Javier Solana in the presence of the special European envoy to the Middle East peace Marc Oti. Shara-Solana talks centered on the latest developments in the region and importance of getting the ME peace process out of its current deadlock, and Syria's important role in this direction as well.

The Foreign Minister underscored in this regard the important role which the EU could play in the Arab-European dialogue, in resolving the issues of the region and towards the Arab initiative of peace. Al-Shara is on a visit to Cairo taking part in a meeting of the Arab Foreign Ministers.

Solana also on Wednesday in Cairo urged Israel to halt building the settlements in West Bank and Gaza Strip.

In statements following a meeting with President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, Solana renewed EU's commitment to move the peace process in the Middle East forward. "Any initiative of reform in the region should not ignore the peace process, and without achieving peace, any initiative of reform will not gain success," he said. " Any initiative or effort for reform should come from within the countries of the region," Solana added. He expressed EU' s willingness to support the Arab proposals and initiatives of reform.
