Syria's statement at the UN concerning the separation wall
Syria-UN, Politics, 10/16/2003

Syria's permanent representative at the United Nations, Faisal Miqdad, has stressed that Israel's aim of building the racial separation wall is to impose the policy of "fai accompli" through which it draws a border line to seperate from the Palestinian people and prevent them from establishing their independent state.

In a statement delivered in front of the UN Security Council yesterday, he underlined that Israel didn't only violate Geneva's 4th Convention by building the settlements, but it went further than that by annexing these big settlements which include about 200,000 settlers.

He pointed out that "Sharon's war government" seeks to foil the peace process stressing that Israel who is trying to justify its practices under pretext of "fighting terrorism" is committing "war crimes through targeting the civilians, expanding the policy of settlement in the occupied territories and exporting its crises through its aggression on Syria and Lebanon."

Miqdad called on the Security Council to assume its responsibilities regarding the "Israeli crimes" asserting that the Council's failure in assuming its responsibilities will influence its credibility and will hinder the realization of the aspired peace in the region.

As usual, the United States used the veto against a draft resolution adopted by the Arab group at the United Nations and by Non Alignment Movement represented by Syria, Guinea and Malaysia.

The draft resolution called on Israel to stop building the "illegal wall."

Countries which participated in the session of the Security Council yesterday "condemned the Israeli policy represented by building the wall, establishing settlements in the occupied Arab lands, and its unjustified aggression on Syria."

They also called on Israel to stop demolishing the homes and seizing the lands stressing their rejection to the Israeli illegal wall which violates Security Council resolution 242.

They also called on Israel to take immediate measures to improve the human circumstances of the Palestinian people and to facilitate transporting humanitarian aid to them.

They asserted that the Security Council's resolutions 242, 338, Arab peace Initiative and Israel's withdrawal from Syrian Golan and the Lebanese occupied lands are the base for the realization of the just and comprehensive peace.
