Phone cable between Israel, Italy raises concern

Italy and Israel have agreed to install a sea cable of high standard international telecommunications which will link the telephone calls and digital lines between Italy and Israel and the southern Mediterranean states. A matter which will raise the sensitivity of these states.

The BBC reported yesterday that this project aims at improving the efficiency of telecommunications between Italy and its neighbors. It commented that when the Arab states of Morocco; Algeria; Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon know that their telephone contacts with Italy and Italy's contact with these countries will be as from one year ahead through a center stationed in Haifa, these countries will have reservations on that because this measure might pave the way in a way or another for Israel to be familiar with these telephone calls because they are gathered in a center on its territory, both ways.

The report stressed that Italy signed that project actually in which works will start in 2004 through installing a sea cable and founding a center for telecommunications broadcasting from the southern Mediterranean states to these countries by a large capacity links that permit 45 million telephone call or 300 hours of digital scenes per second.

The report added that the Italian and Israeli sides stressed they will exert all their efforts to complete this large project before the summer of 2004 so as to be able to make use of it by the Olympic Games in Athens and thereafter Arab and Mediterranean telephone calls will start to flow to Italy through Haifa where the main gathering center is in Katania island in Sicily island, where the center of reception and distribution is situated.
