Al- Assad, Chirac discuss peace efforts, Iraq

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad yesterday held important talks with the French President Jacques Chirac. The talks centered on regional and international conditions and prospects of developing Syrian- French relations in various fields.
Al-Assad talked to President Chirac about his position regarding various hot-bed issues, foremost being the threats directed against Iraq. Al-Assad stressed Syria's opposition to these threats.
View points were almost identical between the two presidents. They stressed that Israel's practices resulted in obstructing the ME peace process and that the Israeli violence will not be conducive to security nor peace.
Yesterday afternoon, the French President arrived in Damascus in a short visit to Syria.
In his talks with President Chirac, President al-Assad expressed Syria's rejection to attacking Iraq. View points between the two countries were almost identical and the two countries were coordinating their efforts at the UN security council to avoid an attack against Iraq.
The two sides stressed that the continued current condition and the oppressive policies conducted by Israel resulted in obstructing the peace process and that the violence practiced by Israel will not lead to peace nor security and that the situation in the region should be dealt with according to international legitimacy resolutions and UN security council resolutions concerned.
The two Presidents agreed to continue development of bilateral relations and on several practical steps to strengthen these relations in various fields. Talks also dealt with the convening of Paris 2 conference concerning Lebanon.
