Iraqi Kurdish delegation visits Syria
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 10/14/2002
A delegation representing the Kurdistani National Federation in Iraq led by al-Suleimaneyah prime minister in Kurdistan district Barham Saleh started a visit to Syria that will last for four days during which he will be meeting with Syrian officials, especially with the Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam and the assistant secretary general of the Baath Party Abdullah al-Ahmar.
Saleh's visit to Damascus comes at very sensitive conditions and few days after the convening of the Arab national congress in support of Iraq, which was attended by the Iraqi prime minister Tareq Aziz.
According to sources of the Kurdistani national federation, Saleh discussed with al-Ahmad and Khaddam "the current situation of Iraq and its future." Stress was laid on "national unity, the unity of the Iraqi territories in any future developments." The talks were described as "important and positive" and that view points were "identical" concerning all debated issues.
Damascus did not officially declare the visit which started on Saturday.
Observers said that this might be "to avoid embarrassment as the Iraqi deputy premier Tareq Aziz who passed through Syria coming from Beirut after his participation in the Arab national conference to lift the siege imposed on Iraq." Saleh will be also meeting with Iraqi opposition figures in Damascus.
