Husam Nazzal starts from Jordan a campaign to compete with Arafat
Palestine, Politics, 8/7/2002
A Palestinian candidate for the Palestinian Presidential elections, carrying the French nationality, has started his election campaign from Jordan, calling for the foundation of a "Parliamentary Palestinian Republic."
Husam Nazzal ( 41 year old) who is known by the name "Sam" in France since 15 years said "I met with the Palestinian citizens and they are convinced of my program." Nazzal who has come from Jenin and who will continue his election campaign later in the occupied Palestinian territories expressed his optimism to win the elections and to replace the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
In his election program, Nazzal called for the foundation of "a democratic, parliamentary republican regime and to embark on a referendum for deciding causes of destiny." The candidate who is a doctor working for "Tour Hospital" in France called for the omission of the phrase "Palestinian authority" because that concept of "authority" means to "have just a single decision." He called for holding normal international relations, especially with Israel. He said "I will ask peace from Israel. If the answer will be positive then no more hatred. Israel has to give more concessions." He announced his rejection to the Palestinian suicide operations "whether these operations are name suicide or 'martyrdom,' the result is the same. It is death, considering that the reason behind that is a collective depression that makes the person kills himself regardless to results."
He held the Palestinian Authority responsible for the violence because this authority "has not met the economic requirements needs of people" and it does not understand "the composition of the Palestinians." He said "I will ask for a grace period to prove Israel's good intention with the Palestinian side. If I cannot, I will quit." Nazzal intends to head for the Palestinian territories after several days to carry out the nomination measures. He will ask for meeting with Arafat.
