Al-Assad confers with the US Senate delegation
Syria-USA, Politics, 1/9/2002

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad at the Damascus al-Shaab palace on Tuesday received W Owens and members of the US Senate: Richard Durban, David Price and Jim Dives and members of their accompanying delegation. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Premier and foreign minister Farouk al-Shara and the US ambassador in Damascus Theodore Qattouf.

Discussions dealt with the reflections of September11 incidents at the US on various regional and international issues.

Al-Assad explained the Syrian view point concerning these reflections noting that one of the basic reasons to the acceleration of terrorism lies in the disagreement on identifications that determine the concept of terrorism and its identity and the concept of extremism.

The president said it is very important that the political address directed from abroad to this ( ME) region to be precise because cultures in this region differ from those in each of Europe and the US.

The president added the US can make use of the experiences of countries which successfully fought terrorism, and Syria, in particular.

The President stressed the need of making a distinction between the information and the evidence, noting that the decision should be taken always on the ground of the evidence rather than the information.

The President added defining criterion to deal with the sides of conflict in the Middle East region is a must necessitated by reality and that Syria welcomes the cooperation of any state with it in its fight of terrorism.

Members of the US delegation highly appreciated what they had learnt from President al-Assad in his analysis of the standing conditions in the ME region and the world, resulted from the incidents of September 11.

They expressed their care to maintain bilateral cooperation with Syria in all fields.

The chairman of the visiting delegation said that Syria has a rich experience in fighting terrorism. An experience that can be made use of to define reasons behind terrorism and means of dealing with it.

He added that the analysis " we " listened to about Syria's history and her experience and the way it dealt with to what it had exposed is considered a useful lesson for us and for many countries in the world.

In conclusion the chairman of the visiting US delegation stressed that the US congress men need the help of President al-Assad and Syria in order to maintain a better and more effective dialogue in the region.
