Eritreans for joining the Arab league
Eritrea-Regional, Politics, 8/15/2001

In a step which is the first of its kind in Eritrea after getting independence, Eritrean press personalities, lawyers, judges and intellectuals criticized their country's policy towards the Arab states. They considered this relation as swinging and many of them described it as foggy and of not being clear.

They raised questions stemming from the fact that many Eritreans call for backing their country's relations with the Arab states and revitalizing these relations, noting that this is based on the great Arab support given to the Eritrean revolution during its armed struggle against Ethiopia.

These Eritrean figures said that Eritrea is situated in an Arab environment and the roots of the Eritrean culture go back to the Arab Peninsula. Many of them also questioned why Eritrea does not join the Arab League, while many others noted the weakness of cultural contacts and relations with the Arab world, stressing that fact that the relations with the Arabs are strategic.
