He was born in 1965 in damascus. He received his elementary, preparatory and secondary school education at al-Houria Institute in Damascus and had hid baccalaureate in 1982. As a secondary school student, he successfully passed parachute jumping course in 1980..
Al-Assad joint Damascus university, faculty of medicine and was graduated a physician with distinction in 1988. He was specialized in ophthalmology, and began practicing as an ophthalmologist at Tishreen military hospital in the outskirts of Damascus in 1988.
In 1992, he went to Britain to continue his specialization in ophthalmology. After finishing his studies he returned back home in 1994. In the same year of 1994 he was promoted Captain in the medical administration army.
He has been the head of the Syrian Computer Society since 1994, supervising its symposiums and annual exhibitions and encouraging youths to learn about computer and up to date technologies. Promoted Major in 1995. Promoted Lt. Col. in 1997, due to his passing of the General staff course with distinction and presenting a distinguished academic scientific research in the army. Promoted Staff colonel in 1999. Promoted Lt. Gen. and named commanded in chief of the army and armed forces on June 11, 2000.
He is known as of strong personality, dignity, modesty and tolerance, besides to what is known about his extreme love of his country and people.
He is sharp-witted, a reader and pursuer of the different aspect of politics. His close companions include many intellectuals and political analysts. He is well-informed of all fields and has an analytical mind and a severe critic of mistakes. Bashar al-Assad has full command of both English and French.
