More than half the Syrian population under 19

The central bureau of statistics has estimated the number of Syria's population, inside Syria in the middle of 1999 at 16.11 million, including 54.4% under the age of 19.

Data from the central bureau for statistics indicates that the number of males out of the population reached 8.24 million while the number of females was 7.87 million.

The number of Syrians registered in the civil records at the beginning of 1999 reached 17.46 million. This figure includes the total number of Syrians inside and outside the country.

The data revealed that the Aleppo province is the first concerning population in the country. It is inhabited by 23.1% of the country's total population, and then comes Damascus and Damascus countryside which have jointly 15.9% of the country's population. Only 2% of the country's population lives in the province of Quneitra, and 2.3% in al-Sweida.

Concerning male to female ratios in the eastern provinces, it is indicated that the number of males is smaller than that of females. In al-Raqqa a 95 males to 100 females ratio exists.

In the other provinces of Lattakia, Quneitra and al-Sweida, the number of males and females is the same.

The number of males is 101% of that of females in the provinces of Tartous, Aleppo and Damascus, 102% in the provinces of Daraa, Idleb, Homs and Hama, and 105% in the Damascus countryside province.

According to census of 1994 (the most recent), Syria's population was 13.783 million while in the Census held in 1970 Syria's population was 6.305 milliojn in 1970 and increased to 9.049 million in the census of 1981.

Meanwhile, the 1999 census of the number of Palestinian refugees in Syria reached 360,586, of which some 241,507 live in the city of Damascus, and the others are distributed on the provinces of Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Lattakia, Daraa and al-Quneitra.
