Turabi urges followers to struggle; army guards strategic locations in Khartoum

Originally published

Tensions prevailed yesterday in Khartoum amid a hot political confrontation between Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir and the speaker of the dissolved parliament, Hassan Turabi.

Turabi undertook continuing the battle against El-Bashir. During a meeting for the leadership of the ruling National Islamic Front Party, Turabi urged the official bodies in Sudan to struggle, as the statement issued by the conference asserted that the members undertook taking historical responsibility toward Sudan.

This comes as the Sudanese people stayed at home and Khartoum's streets became empty in anticipation of serious developments.

Sudanese sources stated that the army's troops are guarding the strategic buildings and locations in Khartoum and that Turabi and some of his followers attempted twice to enter the parliament building, but the guards did not allow them in.
