Israel and the settlers of the Golan

Israeli Minister of Agriculture Haim Oron from the Merets movement has expressed his conviction that efforts should be made in order to permit the citizens of the Golan Heights to have lands in the Galilee or Negev and to rebuild their villages in these territories after their evacuation from the Golan in the course of a peace settlement with Syria.

In a statement quoted by Israeli Radio on Sunday, Oron said, "What is taking place in Tameit district in Sinai is a catastrophic situation (after Israel evacuated this area for Egypt), revealing that it is preferable to move complete villages and towns to another place instead of paying compensation to the citizens of these villages and establishing them in various parts of Israel."
